For those who have painted before there are occasionally special or separate workshops to further your techniques and ability. We pride ourselves in teaching students of all levels, and develop the skills of all students to produce rewarding results. A sample of these may be viewed on our calendar page. We often find our techniques have not been shown or used with certain other teachers and our methods do enable students to produce wonderful paintings in a dedicated studio. Try our courses for yourself and see your progress and skill develop.
Please note, due to demand we have also added afternoon sessions but remember you can only every attend one Taster workshop and we fill from the earliest date first. We are sorry but if you have attended a Taster before you will not be eligible to attend a workshop but we would be delighted to see you at one of our courses which run mornings, afternoons and evenings.
Courses see our calendar page, if for some reason you cannot book because we are either full or you cannot make these dates - book mark this page for the future, we may add further events. Just go to your local store and buy one tube of 'artist quality' paint and you will see that these events truly are value for money when you consider everything is included.
Why not bring a friend or even two with you. You will have a wondertime time and experience and each take home a completed painting.
These Taster Workshops are designed specifically to enable the new learner to 'have a go'. In certain circumstances some places may be available for other painters searching for somewhere to improve their skills, who would like to sample the Art Trail Centre experience prior to furthering their Art with Class learning with us. * Please do feel free to discuss this opportunity with us prior to booking! One of our satisfied student comments (unedited)
My name is Christine Thatcher and I am a student at The Art Trail Centre - Jill McKay’s drawing and painting school.
For many years I had thought how lovely it would be to be able to paint using watercolours. I would imagine myself sitting relaxed, creating pictures of beautiful landscapes, birds and flowers with an array of wonderful watercolours to choose from - but that’s as far as the idea went. Having never been taught to draw I never imaged I would be able to paint – so the years went on and the dream became less and less of a reality.
But in August 2009 everything changed – I saw an advert for a “Watercolour Taster” at The Art Trail Centre it said absolutely no experience necessary, all materials and step by step tuition provided and best of all it was for beginners, which alleviated some of my fear, I didn’t want experts looking at what I had painted. Also the class was advertised as small and friendly which also appealed to me as the thought of being in a big hall or classroom reminded me of being at school.
So, I called and booked a place for the following fortnight. When the day came I was very nervous – it all seemed such a good idea at the time. When I arrived I was made to feel very welcome. Before we started painting Jill explained about the paints we were going to use and how to hold the brush and after half an hour it was time to paint. Jill showed us what to do and then it was our turn. Well I sat there with my brush loaded with colour and sat there and sat there... Jill said "you have to put the brush on the paper.. " I was so nervous but after that first brush stroke my nerves went. Jill explained everything we had to do and it was truly step by step.
The taster was for two hours and it went so quick but at the end I had actually produced a Watercolour painting of a “Sunset at Mudeford” I was amazed, I couldn't believe it. All brush work and no drawing – my friends and family could not believe I had painted it.
I was so excited after the taster class I wanted to learn a lot more so I decided to enrol on one of Jill’s Painting and Drawing classes. That was five years ago. Jill’s classes are so interesting, each week I learn something new. The topics/subjects covered are never the same. The highlight of my week is my painting class – I love it.
Signed up for course with some trepidation- have not done watercolour before. Really enjoyed the experience. Well structured and taught and brought home a completed picture to impress my family. Would like to sign up for more with this tutor,
Fun, lively and a wow painting for me, pace was okay and I thought correct, some may differ but we are all different and for Jill to get us all to complete on time is a sign of her enthusiastic professionalism. A big thankyou to both my daughter for the gift voucher and Jill for the workshop, and yes I have enrolled for more classes - why spoil a good thing by sitting at home!
