Watercolour Nude StudyWatercolour Painting
These classes are designed to use the minimum materials at low cost with high quality results. Full tuition during the class will guide you through the many application techniques and effects.
Handy Hints
Students need to provide their own paints, brushes and paper. We use student quality tube PAINTS called 'Cotman' made by Winsor & Newton. If students wish to use artist quality paints then we recommend those made by Winsor & Newton or Daler Rowney. The BRUSHES we recommend are Pro Arte no. 10 watercolour rounds for their shape and durability. Watercolour PAPER needs to be a minimum of 300gsm (140lb) in weight, larger than A4.

Acrylics
Acrylic paint is sold in tubes in student or artist grades. An exciting quick drying medium, it is capable of producing many different effects and can be useful for all types of subjects. Basic primary colours, black and Titanium white will start you off adequately. Unless stated as inclusive within the course or workshop, paints, brushes and boards can be supplied if required for additional cost. Full tuition is given on their use.
Handy Hints
Being liquid plastic, when dried it does not move on the painting board or wash out of clothing. So beware and wear an old shirt or apron. Mistakes can be painted over if required. (What mistakes?!)

Rome PastelSoft Pastels
We use Daler Rowney soft pastels for their easy coverage and bright highlight colours. Materials and equipment are included in the cost. Students can either use our materials at the advertised price, or bring their own for a small price reduction. Your choice must be stated on booking, as the colours are especially chosen for the particular class. As there are over 300 colour varieties, use our 'all in price' for an exact colour match to the picture being demonstrated.
Handy Hints
Bring a damp sponge in a small plastic bag to keep your fingers clean while working. Bring masking tape to fix it to the board. - and a piece of tracing paper to cover your work for when you take it home.

Gouache
These are water based high grade poster paints. They can be used very delicately but cannot substitute watercolours for techniques like wet on wet painting. They are opaque, which means they are capable of covering previous layers but are not waterproof when dry, as acrylics are. This means they can be washed out, can smudge underpaintings if worked with the brush for too long but can have a transparent watercolour quality if thinned with water. Used by graphic designers, great fun and highly effective. Our occasional workshops in gouache have produced excellent paintings.
Handy Hints
A set can be bought at a reasonable cost - include white and black with your collection and you are ready to start painting.

Drawing
Drawing can be very exciting - in our painting classes a 2B or B grade pencil will suffice - remember there are many different ways to draw. Drawing workshops will stipulate which additional grades or drawing tools are being used which you may need to bring, for example Oil Pastels or Coloured Pencils perhaps. Full tuition is given in application techniques and design.
Handy Hints
Buy a putty rubber to protect the finish of watercolour paper.

Pen and WashPen & Wash
Pen & Wash usually means black ink and lightly painted watercolour washes. Coloured inks are sometimes used. Our workshops sometimes include certain materials. Paper used can vary according to the effects desired. Pens can be either dip pens or bought as drawing pens which are available in different thicknesses.
Handy Hints
Ink pots and pens are available in water soluble or water resistant - do check which method is being used in the class you book on.

Chinese Brush Painting
A very precise art, Tuition is given for either traditional Chinese styles or for painting in a Chinese freestyle method. Private classes and one day workshops are offered in this medium. All paints, paper, brushes and other equipment are supplied to save you purchasing all the equipment. Full tuition is given on brush handling and painting on schuan paper.
Handy Hints
Book a personal workshop with your friends - you will go home with one or two authentic looking Chinese paintings which you can frame later!

Mixed MediaMixed Media
This refers to a piece of work which has more than one type of paint or drawing medium in the same picture. Mixtures are varied and exciting - there are not many combinations that do not work together, so you can try anything to see what happens. Our occasional mixed media workshops are specific in their aims and results, with full guidance along the way. Any advertised workshops will specify the exact materials required.
